2011 winners, finalists and semi-finalists announced

David Jekel, a senior from Providence Classical Christian School in Woodinville, WA, took top honors in the 2011 Phaedrus Latin Composition Contest. Jekel's first place finish was a repeat of last year, earning another first place check for $500 for his fable entiled "Friendship and Poison." This year's second place finisher was Sarah Hill, a homeschooler from Moscow, ID. Sarah received the $300 second place cash prize for her fable "The Proud Frog." Hemali Shah, from Townsend Harris High School in Glen Oaks, NY, earned the $200 third place prize for her fable titled "The Foolish Lion."

In all, 160 students competed in the contest, from 18 states as well as England and Russia. This year the Top Ten were and 16 more were honored as Finalists and 46 were recognized as semi-finalists.

Timothy Griffith, a Fellow of Classical Languages at New Saint Andrews College is the Academic Director of the Phaedrus Latin Composition Contest. He supervised the three stages of judging. The entries were assigned a number to shield any identifying information. Second-year Latin students at New Saint Andrews participated in the first round of judging. Volunteer Latin teachers around the country helped judge in round two. Faculty at New Saint Andrews judged the entries making it to the final round. The compositions were graded based on the student's ability to accurately use Latin vocabulary and grammar, as well as the student's creativity in subject matter and writing style.

All students who took part in this year's contest should be commended! It's no small effort to write a 100- to 200-word fable in Latin. We're excited to see the effort by so many students!

Teacher registration for next year's contest will open September 1, 2011, at www.phaedruslatincontest.org.
